Standing strong through the floods — Dr Jacinta Mangiameli in Katherine

When ACRRM registrar Dr Jacinta Mangiameli moved to Katherine in the Northern Territory, she knew rural medicine would bring variety, challenge and the opportunity to make a real difference in community.

What she didn’t expect was to experience the town’s worst flooding in nearly three decades – followed by ex-tropical cyclone Narelle!

Growing demand sees allergy assist® service continue nationwide

The allergy education and advice platform, allergy assist® is being continued beyond a successful initial trial period. Since launching, more than 800 doctors have registered with allergy assist®, reflecting the increasing need. There has been a strong uptake by GPs and Rural Generalists in regional, rural and remote areas, reflecting two thirds of registrations.

Cases for advice can be submitted via the platform and are responded to within 48 hours by a clinical immunology/allergy specialist. More than a third of cases submitted for advice relate to food allergy. Other common cases are questions about skin reactions, history of anaphylaxis and drug (medication) allergy.

The new ADHD online course is here (6 CPD hours)

ADHD is increasingly part of everyday practice for Rural Generalists and GPs, with expanding guidance and prescribing rights across states and territories.

To support you in this evolving space, we’re pleased to introduce a new online course - ADHD: Assessment and Management for Rural Generalists.

Free to ACRRM members, this case-based course is designed to build confidence in assessing, diagnosing, and managing ADHD in rural and remote settings, where access to specialist services may be limited and shared care is essential.

Health alert: Advice on Diphtheria outbreak

Case numbers continue to rise from a large outbreak of Diphtheria, primarily among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the NT and WA, but is also present in other states.

The federal government has unveiled a $7.2 million package for more diphtheria vaccines, as it tries to stem the spread of the disease.

The number of Diphtheria cases reported in Australia in 2026 to date substantially exceeds the total annual number of cases recorded in any previous year since national surveillance began.

Health professionals should consider the condition when a patient presents with a clinically compatible illness, especially if they have had direct or indirect contact with a remote Aboriginal community.
