More Rural Generalists training where Queensland needs them most

Queensland communities will benefit from more Rural Generalists (RGs) training and working in areas of greatest need, with more than 145 doctors commencing the ACRRM Fellowship program in 2026.

Training for 2026 is officially underway, with commencements up 40% on 2025. Orientation kicked off on 19 January, welcoming 70 registrars to the program.

ACRRM President Dr Rod Martin says the growth reflects increasing interest in Rural Generalist Medicine and the strength of ACRRM’s Fellowship program.

“These doctors are choosing to train where they are most needed – in rural, remote, and First Nations communities,” Dr Martin says.

QLD and ACT Orientation events

Dr. Vimbai Kapuya and Tim Mayberry, Engagement Officer, attended the Canberra Health intern orientation, where 102 interns are commencing across the network. The presentation generated strong engagement and interest, with several future RG prospects identified. Meanwhile, ACRRM sponsored a lunch for interns at Townsville University Hospital, attended by 50 of the 72 interns. The event was attended by the Queensland training team, with special appearances from Dr Tarun Sen Gupta and Dr Sarah Larkins, the Dean of the JCU College of Medicine and Dentistry.
