Urging Australians to take extra care over Easter

Rural doctors are urging Australians to take extra care this Easter, warning the long weekend often brings a spike in serious injuries presented at regional, rural, and remote hospitals.

ACRRM President Dr Rod Martin says Rural Generalists regularly see an increase in accidents during holiday weekends, placing additional pressure on clinics and rural hospitals operating with limited staff.

“While many Australians are enjoying time with family and friends over Easter, Rural Generalists remain on call and ready to respond when accidents and illnesses occur,” Dr Martin says.

New RG Life Hacks episode: Using AI scribing software in general practice

How do AI scribing tools translate into everyday rural practice?

In the newest episode of RG Life Hacks, Dr Emily Moody speaks with Dr Owen Bradfield — dual-qualified medical practitioner and health lawyer — and Dr Vinuri Hapuhinne, ACRRM registrar, about how AI scribes are being used in general practice and what registrars need to consider before adopting them.

Vinuri shares her experience using an AI scribe from day one, and how it can reduce cognitive load, support documentation, and create more space for patient-centred care. The conversation also explores key considerations including consent, privacy, data storage, and the importance of reviewing every generated note.

For registrars exploring new technologies, this episode offers practical insights into using AI safely while maintaining responsibility for clinical records.

ACRRM in action

Correction: In the ACRRM in Action section of the 26 March Country Watch, it was stated that the Canberra Primary Care Conference was a NRHA event. This was incorrect. The Primary Care Conference was a Department of Health, Disability and Ageing event. The online version of the edition has been updated to reflect this.

Assessment support in Dubbo and stakeholder meetings in Broome

The NSW team delivered an Assessment Support Workshop this week in Dubbo at the School of Rural Health. The session focused on supporting registrars in their assessment preparation, providing guidance, resources, and practical strategies to help them feel confident and well-prepared.

Meanwhile, the WA team visited Broome, meeting with stakeholders, junior doctors, and students. They held a JMO discussion at the hospital, spoke with an SMO about embedding RG in the facility, and met the NRHSN representative to explore future opportunities. They also connected with a coordinator from University of Notre Dame, introduced themselves to first-year medical students, and held discussions with the local RCS and HPN teams.
